Welcome to the
web site for Mombasa Relief Initiative (MRI). Our mission
is to serve the children of Mombasa, Kenya through three key
initiatives—health, education and economic empowerment.
When traveling to Africa for the first time, the first observations
that most people make is that Africa is nothing like it’s
portrayed on t.v. I don’t know why, but the media has
shown very little of the real Africa and usually concentrates
on the worse of a very beautiful continent.
The media is now ignoring a situation that could escalate
into a gigantic problem; that problem is “hunger”.
The rising cost of many daily commodities and fuel prices
has had a devastating effect on countries like Kenya. Food
prices have doubled while unemployment and wages have stayed
the same. Children are going days without food and their education
is the last thing on their mind.
For as little as $1 per day we can feed a child lunch and
snack at school. We are currently feeding 300 kids per day
but there are 700 more kids waiting on us to start a feeding
program at another school. With your help we can feed 1500
children lunch and a snack by the end of 2008.
2008 TRIP REVIEW
The 2008 trip to Kenya was a success! We hit the ground running
and delivered a multitude of goods and services to the people
we support in Kenya. The following is a brief re-cap of this
year’s trip:
1. MRI launched its second feeding program at Manzi Moja primary
school; MRI is now feeding 250 students lunch and a snack
every school day. This is a major accomplishment but we’re
not content we still have 2 large schools that need feeding
programs.
2. Sponsored life saving surgery for a little girl; who was
suffering from a hernia that was slowly choking her intestines.
The surgery was a success and the girl is recovering.
3. Hosted a two day forum on water sanitation and malaria.
At the end of the two day forum mosquito nets were distributed
to over 50 needy households.
4. Conducted a HIV seminar at Cheers. Despite a few obstacles
this year’s event was successful in getting out the
message on the proper use of condoms and dispelling some common
myths about AIDS and the HIV virus.
5. Physically challenged. At this event over 500 children
receive a health lunch, and are treated to entertainment and
prizes. This event is always a trip highlight. The interaction
between MRI and the children of Bombululu is incredible.
6. Furnished a sewing machine to be used in vocational training
for students of Pwani School for the mentally challenged.
7. Over saw the distribution of school kits, t-shirts, and
feminine products at 2 of our participating schools. Over
400 children benefited from MRI.
8. Distributed over 600 tooth brushes to promote dental health.
Good job MRI, but our work is not
finished!
